Task 2 Experimental Sound Work

About the Art and Artist

This artwork is the Astral Clocktower by Ipan Hf. He is a concept artist based in Indonesia and specialises in environment concept art and illustration. Other than this not much is known about the artist, except that for this artwork he was inspired by the video game BloodborneThe artwork is in the style of concept art, made to look like it came directly from the game's planning documents. The location of the Astral Clocktower is an actual area within the game's downloadable content, The Old Hunter.

Sounds in the Image:

What Can Be Seen:

  • Wooden floor
  • Clock hands
  • Bells
  • Candles
Other Sounds I Imagine:
  • Wind blowing
  • Sword being taken out
  • gears/metallic sounds of the clock machinery
  • Scurrying of rodents

Resources Used:

For this task, I used Davinci Resolve for the actual sound design and editing aspect. Sound effects were pulled from the online sound library Artlist.io. The below image shows all the sound effects I downloaded and used:

Making Process:

I downloaded a high-quality version of the image and brought it into Davinci Resolve, from there I first made a list similar to the one above where I listed all the sounds that were present in the image and the ones I felt would also be present but couldn't see. After this, I wrote down a scenario for how I felt the sounds would appear. The image below is a screenshot of these lists:

Once this was done, I went to Artlist to find each sound. I would search for the sound first, and once satisfied I would download it and roughly add it to the start of the timeline. Once this was done for all sounds I began the process of arranging the sounds, I was advised that I shouldn't just have all the sounds playing together as soon as it starts. That's why, I made the scenario after the end of the list. Following the scenario, I arranged the sounds in a way that made it seem like someone was going up the tower and observing it. Lastly, once the entire structure was in place I was able to go in and adjust the volume of the sounds to make sure they were properly overlapping with each other without merging together, this is also when I added effects to certain sounds, such as the wooden creaks and the scurrying of mice to make it sound like it was distant compared to the other sounds. The image below is a screenshot of the Davinci Resolve timeline for this assignment:
