Exercise 3: Sound Design

My goal with this was to act as if I were the sound designer for this film (Edgar Wright's Shaun of the Dead) So I recreated the audio within this clip to the best of my ability, the only elements not remade are the score and the dialogue itself. This was because I wanted to focus on all the sound effects themselves, considering the timing, the mixing and what sound effects would be best to use. I used Artlist to find all my sound effects.

The first thing I did after choosing a scene was to watch the scene in its entirety and make an initial list of all the sounds I could hear. I then went to Artlist to find sounds which I thought best fit the sounds that were in the original scene. A lot of the sounds in this scene are not constantly playing but they do repeat often. For example, in the scene, we can hear dogs barking before the main character enters the store and a bit after he leaves the store as well. Because of this, I made sure to focus on one sound at a time so that I would not overwhelm myself. It was a slow process but I had to ensure the proper timing of all the sounds. Once all the sounds were added and properly timed to the scene I started adjusting the sound of each clip to make sure it aligned with the sounds in the original. The biggest difficulty I faced throughout the entire process was not being able to find sounds for smaller movements, such as when the main character is choosing a drink or when he's picking out an ice cream. For these moments I had to get creative with the sounds that I picked. Again, for example, if we use the shot where the main character is choosing a drink, instead of being able to find the sounds of cans moving I found a sound for a DVD player closing that I thought fit closely with the original audio.

Below is a screenshot of my timeline as well as the original video and the redone audio that I did.
